The Art of Money

A Life-Changing Guide to Financial Happiness
Borrow Borrow Borrow
Awarded the 2016 Nautilus Silver Medal for Personal Growth!
This is the book your money–savvy best friend, therapist, and accountant would write if they could. It's the book about money for people who don't even want to think about money, until the arrival of that inevitable day when we all realize we must come to terms with this thing called money.
Everyone has pain and challenges, strengths and dreams about money, and many of us mix profound shame into that relationship. In The Art of Money, Bari Tessler offers an integrative approach that creates the real possibility of "money healing," using our relationship with money as a gateway to self–awareness and a training ground for compassion, confidence, and self–worth.
Tessler's gentle techniques weave together emotional depth, big picture visioning, and refreshingly accessible, nitty–gritty money practices that will help anyone transform their relationship with money and, in so doing, transform their life. As Bari writes, "When we dare to speak the truth about money, amazing healing begins."

Excerpts-
  • Chapter One Money: An Initiation

We all have pain and challenges, strengths and dreams about money. In the many years since I taught my first workshop about money in a friend's living room, I have been continually startled and fascinated to learn: everyone, from every town, city, age, race, gender, and economic background, has shame and stuck places around money. Money isn't just about the numbers: it's also about our relationship with ourselves. I have held the hands of folks from every possible socioeconomic background as they bravely told their stories about money, unraveled and understood and un–shamed them, and crafted new beliefs and practices within their money relationship that brought them more awareness, peace, and joy than they'd ever dreamt possible.

Over the years, I have not only supported others in this work; I have moved mountains within my own money relationship, as a creative entrepreneur, within my marriage, and as a parent.

I have re–examined that toxic and unhelpful idea that "money isn't spiritual" and learned, instead, to honor money as a bridge between heaven and earth. I have worked with concepts of value, worth, and right livelihood, in profound and practical ways. I have broken through one money ceiling after the next. I have learned to birth and grow a business that feels creative, fun, and fueled by deep meaning and love. I have crafted savvy, sustainable business models and welcomed an amazing team to help me and expand the mission. I have made my money practices my own, through body–based mindfulness, dark chocolate, creativity, and playfulness. I have incorporated self–love and healthy boundaries into my money relationship and my business — so I can share my gifts with the world and have plenty of time to be with my son, my husband, my mountain, my dear friends, and my solitude. And I have become a seasoned guide through the emotional, practical, and psycho–spiritual facets of this thing we call money.

    ***

You might learn how to "spend less and save more" in this book, but it won't be in the way you think and it won't be the main thing you'll learn. Mainstream financial advice is certainly useful and important, but there's so much more going on in our relationship with money. The plethora of financial gurus, books, and strategies in our world today is a telling sign of the suffering so many of us feel around money. But in my experience, unless we first turn within and heal our emotional relationship with money, no external changes (no matter how savvy the program) will stick. That's why I'm drawn to the deeper places within our money relationship: those rich with meaning, personal story, and purpose.

That said: I love the practical, external side of money, and that's certainly a part of this work. Put nuts on bolts, tighten them down, and get things done. This is where we integrate and enact the inner shifts money healing creates and make transformation sustainable. You'll certainly find some of my favorite tools, tips, and practices. But I know that creating profound, sustainable change in your money relationship asks us to go far deeper than following someone else's list of "top ten ways to get your credit card debt under control." That's why I won't define financial maturity, success, or ease for you . Instead, I invite you to define these for yourself, and light a loving path towards them for you to walk.

I believe in a nurturing, gentle, and radically un–shaming approach. I have consistently found the compassionate path to be far, far more effective in creating sustainable transformation than the self–critical one....

According to financial therapist Tessler, people can shift their negative relationship with money only by untangling old patterns and negativity. Through numerous exercises, rituals, and self-care practices, the author covers eight key areas that people are longing for in their encounters with currency: clarity, intimacy, knowledge, ease and peace of mind, success, value, hope, and support. Tessler aids readers in creating a cash map by which they evaluate their needs and then determine how it matches their income. Mindfulness techniques are applied to each step. VERDICT A novel method of getting to the apex of money management issues and planning accordingly.
